A Woman's Place is wherever she chooses.
-
When this photo emerged in 1970s Ireland, it served as a tool that inspired women to join the fight against the British in the republican women’s organization called the Cumann na mBan. Various rumors were circulated about the photo's origin including one that it was of a woman firing her fiancé's rifle, who was ultimately killed.
-
This image resurfaced around 2019 and historians were determined to figure out the story behind it. After contacting the original photographer, it was discovered that while the photo was staged, the woman was in fact, an IRA volunteer.
-
Nonetheless, it continues to serve as an inspirational image just as it did back in 1972 when it was chosen for Women's Day in Ireland captioned,
"Don't be afraid to be associated with a strong woman. The day may come and she'll be your only army."
